Frequently asked questions about the Sheltersuit toiletry bag

What is the toiletry bag made of?

Made from Deltex, the strong and weather-resistant material used in the production of Sheltersuit sleeping bags, with zippers saved from destruction. It is therefore a bag made from recycled materials, manufactured in the Netherlands. Because each bag is made from residual fabric, the individual bags may vary slightly in appearance.

What happens to my purchase amount?

For every toiletry bag sold for €30, we donate €5 directly to the Sheltersuit Foundation, the Dutch foundation that makes jacket-sleeping bags for people sleeping on the streets. The remainder covers materials, production costs in the Netherlands, and the design by Oksana from the Sheltersuit team.

How big is the toiletry bag and what fits in it?

The size is approximately 19.5 x 7.5 x 14 cm. Enough for your travel routine: a (trial) set with three products, a lip balm, toothbrush and toothpaste fit together. You can even add a small bottle of Shower Oil or a Body Bar.

Can I gift the toiletry bag filled?

Yes, that might be the best use for it. Combine the bag with a trial set or a few minis and you have a complete, sustainable gift with a story. Tick "send as a gift" when ordering and we will send everything directly to the recipient.

How do I maintain the bag?

Always ensure that the pumps of your Food for Skin products are securely closed to prevent oil from leaking into your bag. Deltex can be washed at 60ºC, but to keep the fabric looking its best, we recommend washing the toiletry bag at 30ºC. Does the fabric appear uneven after washing? Briefly tumble dry it with a tennis ball.

From sleeping bag to toiletry bag

This toiletry bag is made from Deltex, the strong and weather-resistant material that Sheltersuit uses to make sleeping bags and jackets for the homeless. Remnants from that production are given a second life as toiletry bags, and the zippers have also been saved from destruction. The design comes from Oksana, who came to the Netherlands as a refugee from Ukraine and is now a permanent member of the Sheltersuit team. Because each bag is made from remnant material, no two are exactly alike.

What is the Sheltersuit Foundation?

Sheltersuit is a Dutch social enterprise that makes jackets that can be transformed into sleeping bags for people experiencing homelessness. The products are produced sustainably, often from recycled materials, and partly made in social workshops where people with a distance to the labor market work. The goal is to offer direct protection against cold and rain and to contribute to structural solutions for homelessness.

Since 2014, Sheltersuit has distributed 40,661 Sheltersuits and Shelterbags, created 251 work and development opportunities, and given 197,641 kilograms of residual material a new lease on life.

Where are the toiletry bags made?

For us, sustainability goes beyond just materials. The toiletry bags are crafted in the Sheltersuit workshop. The workshop is a place where craftsmanship is learned, talent can develop, and self-esteem grows. Each bag not only contributes to less waste but also to a better future for people. The design is by Oksana, who came to the Netherlands as a refugee from Ukraine and is now a permanent member of the Sheltersuit team. She started behind the sewing machine and gradually found her way back to her original background as a designer. Today, she works as a production assistant in sampling and quality control. Her story illustrates what this project is truly about: not only giving materials a second life, but also people.

What fits in it?

At approximately 19.5 x 7.5 x 14 centimeters, this is the ideal size for a weekend getaway or for your gym bag: compact, yet spacious enough for a complete routine. A trial set fits effortlessly, along with a Berry Balm, small tube of SPF, and a toothbrush. Filled with minis, it's also a gift that gives twice over.
